Mesothelioma Lung Cancer
Understanding the Types of Malignant Mesothelioma Cancer
Mesothelioma lung cancer is a group of diseases related to exposure to asbestos. The two most common diseases linked to asbestos lung cancer are asbestosis and mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma.
There are a number of different types of mesothelioma lung cancer:
- Malignant Mesothelioma
- Pericardial Mesothelioma
- Peritoneal Mesothelioma
- Pleural Mesothelioma
- Abdominal Mesothelioma
- Benign Mesothelioma
- Mesothelioma Cancer
- Mesothelioma Chrysotile Peritoneal
- Mesothelioma Cystic
- Mesothelioma Epithelial
In asbestos-related illnesses, lung cancer is the leading cause of death. Asbestos is a highly toxic group of fibrous minerals that were used in the production of schools, homes, buildings, cement, ceiling and floor tiles, automobile brakes and clutch parts, and thousands of other products worldwide.
Renovation, remodeling, deterioration, or disturbance can cause the asbestos fibers to break loose into the air. If these fibers are ingested or inhaled, they can become trapped in the digestive tract or lungs, causing serious diseases such as lung cancer.
While the highest risk factor for lung cancer is smoking, asbestos exposure is another leading cause. Workers in the plumbing, steel, auto, electrical, mining, insulation and milling industries have the greatest chance of developing lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Research shows that workers who are repeatedly exposed to asbestos increase their chance of lung cancer by seven to ten times. Also, asbestos workers who smoke are 50 to 100 times more likely to die from lung cancer.
Lung cancer is hard to diagnose early, spreads quickly, and is not often cured. Asbestos-induced lung cancer is most likely found in the lower lobes and usually occurs at a younger age than other lung cancers. Common symptoms of lung cancer include:
- Change in breathing patterns
- Persistent chest pains
- Shortness of breath
- Anemia
- Coughing
- Hoarseness
