Chrysotile Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Chrysotile peritoneal mesothelioma attacks the lining of the abdominal cavity. When small chrysotile fibers are inhaled or ingested, they become trapped and can lead to peritoneal mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma that is caused by chrysotile may take up to 40 years or more to appear.

Those suffering from chrysotile peritoneal mesothelioma can experience abdominal pain, caused by pressure on internal organs.

Symptoms of chrysotile peritoneal mesothelioma also include:

• nausea
• vomiting
• bowel blockage
• swelling of the abdomen

Usually when an individual is diagnosed with chyrostile peritoneal mesothelioma, the disease is already in an advanced stage. Most victims of chyrsotile peritoneal mesothelioma have a year or less to live after symptoms appear. Patients who develop this disease were most likely exposed to a high level of chyrostile asbestos at the workplace. They most likely worked on shipyards or other areas where asbestos was utilized for insulation or fireproofing. People can also come into contact with chrysotile asbestos through extensive exposure at home, in school or at work.

When chrysotile asbestos fibers are inhaled and remain in the lung, they can cause mesothelioma of the peritoneum, specifically the lining around the stomach. The cancerous tumors that grow on the lining can hinder the movement of the stomach.
